Through exploration of the online tool Oppia, participants will develop an understanding of how the concept of Finite State Machines applies to and can personalise the learning process, and the benefits this provides to personalisation of learning activities. The advantages of data and analytics will also be explored as a means of further tailoring the experience of students when using the tool, and implications of these approaches for the longer-term will also be discussed.
The workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience developing a "Learning Exploration", and is designed to meet the needs of participants with a wide variety of backgrounds. Learning Explorations provide teachers with a means of providing personalised learning experiences for students en masse, and a mechanism for collecting data to identify common errors made by students as well as intervention activities to address these misunderstandings.
With options available such as locally hosted solutions and downloadable versions of any exploration created, Oppia provides a way of not only delivering learning experiences to students, but for students to author their own learning activities and engage with computational thinking processes through the concept of Finite State Machines.
If you bring your own laptop to the session all you will need is access to the Internet to participate in a build-your-own exploration activity. Oppia is free and you can sign up before or at the start of the activity.
